MEET THE PROTAGONISTS
Leading figures in the European fight against tobacco in
UNITED KINGDOM

Patricia Hewitt
Former Cabinet Minister for Health, UK

Patricia Hewitt was the Cabinet Minister for Health when the law against public smoking was passed in England.   She talks about the key points that led to a total rather than partial ban, of protecting health rather than dictating behaviour, and comments on issues that could be considered by other countries yet to implement a ban.

Deborah Arnott, Director
Action on Smoking and Health

ASH is the NGO established by the Royal College of physicians in the early 1970’s, and has been successfully working for tobacco control since that time.  Deborah Arnott talks about the way in which public support for smoke free legislation was encouraged by simple key messages and illustrates the importance of research and measuring of public opinion in order to provide support for political action.
